The Sontronics Saturn 2 is the latest version of the British-made FET condenser mic with versatile features for recording all kinds of sources.
Sontronics introduced the first Saturn microphone in 2010, so the manufacturer has taken its time in developing its successor which debuted at NAMM last year.

Its construction uses a K67-style capsule suspended within a hard-anodized aluminium ring, hence the ‘Saturn’ designation. With the Saturn 2, the circuitry has been upgraded with premium low-tolerance components. Therefore, the overall sonic quality, dynamic range, and sensitivity have all been improved.
In addition, what’s interesting about the latest Saturn mic is its digital control system for adjusting the pickup pattern. This ensures the highest level of accuracy when using stereo configurations, and gives you access to nine pickup settings.
Besides the five polar patterns, there are four extra in-between positions. When recording a range of different sources, this gives you the tools to experiment, so you can achieve the best recordings in both mono and stereo mic placements.
Furthermore, the high-pass filter switch can be set at 75 or 125 Hz when engaged, while the pad can attenuate the input signal at -10 dB and -20 dB. These controls are easily accessed on the front panel, so you can make adjustments quickly.
Overall, the Saturn 2 is certainly in the workhorse category of studio condensers. While its design might not suit everyone’s horn-rimmed spectacles, the sound certainly can’t be argued with.
