Softube Vocoder: 20-band vocoder plug-in with 6-voice carrier synth
Softube has launched Vocoder, a 20-band vocoder plug-in that includes a 6-voice polyphonic carrier synth. The plug-in is designed to deliver the sound and feel of vintage vocoders with a modern workflow and creative features.

Vocoder sounds are more popular than ever. Now, Swedish developer Softube presents its vision of a modern vocoder plug-in. The company says that Vocoder delivers the classic sounds that have shaped popular music since the 1970s, but with a modern workflow and a couple of interesting, creative features.
Softube Vocoder divides the signal up into 4 to 20 bands. You can further adjust the response with the Emphasis, Spectral Tilt and Shape controls. A visual analyzer makes it easy to see what’s going on.
The plug-in also includes a 6-voice polyphonic synthesizer for the carrier signal. It lets you choose from sawtooth, square or pulse waves (with PWM) or noise. There’s also an Attack-Hold-Decay envelope and a little mini keyboard that you can use to create chords. The synth is MIDI-controllable.
For more unusual vocoder effects, Softube has included an interesting Freeze feature. This freezes and holds the modulator signal either manually, rhythmically (synced to the DAW) or via MIDI notes. That opens up some interesting creative possibilities for creating rhythmic or MIDI-controlled vocoder effects.
I do like the interface, which looks easy enough for a quick creative workflow, while providing all the necessary tweaking options for custom vocoder sounds. If you’re looking for a high-quality vocoder plug-in, Softube’s version looks like a great new alternative.
Price and compatibility
Softube Vocoder is now available for an introductory price of USD 79. This offer is good through April 8, 2022, after which the price will increase to USD 99. You can get the plug-in at Plugin Boutique (affiliate link).
The plug-in runs on macOS 10.13 – 11.6.1 (support for macOS 12 is pending) and Windows 10 (64 bit / Windows 11 support pending). It’s available in VST, VST3, AU and AAX formats. You’ll need an iLok account or dongle for activation.

Feature wise it’s not even close to the Logic EVOC 20.
