The new Marshall Murder One Lemmy Signature by Softube is an attempt to emulate the late bass legend’s classic amp head, and help get you close to his raucous tones. Another interesting new tool is Celestion Speaker Shaper, programmed to let you get super geeky with your speaker emulations.
Marshall Murder One Lemmy Signature
Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister was famous for his use of the Rickenbacker bass and walls of Marshall amplifiers and speakers. In later years, he is often pictured with a modified Super Bass 100W, nicknamed Murder One. This is the amp head that Softube has digitised and recreated for use within your DAW.
Ace of Tone
SOftube says the Marshall Murder One Lemmy Signature is a precise emulation of the original amplifier and the custom-made speakers played by the speed fuelled rocker. Lemmy’s setup is crucial to the history of heavy metal, so this new plug-in could be a go-to for rock ‘n’ roll or punk rock sounds, for both bass and guitar. Both Jimi Hendrix, who Lemmy famously once roadied for, and Jimmy Page used the Super Bass 100W amp head, so it is certainly a core part of that rock tone.
The original Lemmy rig, recorded at the original studio
At his Maple Sound Studios in California, Motörhead’s Grammy-winning producer Cameron Webb recorded Lemmy’s exact speaker setup used in the studio and on tour: a Marshall MF280L 4×12′′ and a Marshall 1979L 4×15′′.
And thankfully, the Murder One Lemmy plug-in also has numerous presets, including some of the long-standing Motörhead producers based on Lemmy’s sound. I think this will really help you to dial in those heavy bass and guitar tone for your tracks, so a nice way to get a huge gnarly sound, warts and all, in your music.
