Building your own synthesizer sounds like an exciting idea. With modular synths you are part of the way there, building your synth from pre-made modules. But what if you could build the modules themselves? That’s what AI Synthesis are encouraging you to do with their DIY module kits for beginners.

AI Synthesis DIY Modules

They have released the first two in a series of modules designed as kits for all sorts of levels of experience. The first one is the AI001 “Multiple” which could not be simpler. It’s a 2hp thin module for splitting audio signals. You can choose between 1 in 7 out or 2 in 4 out. The kit comes with all the components and will teach you the basics of soldering, signal path and grounding.

The second module is the AI002 Audio and CV Mixer which is more challenging but also looks a lot more exciting. This is 6hp wide and mixers 3 channels into one with these fabulous red knobs. This kit will introduce you to pots and resisters, IC’s and capacitors – all good fun.

There are more on the way including the AI003 Looping ADSR Envelope Generator which should be released soon.

You can of course buy them ready built, but where’s the fun in that? They are surprisingly affordable. The AI001 being $25 for the full kit and the AI002 and AI003 are $40. Not bad for a bunch of useful Eurorack modules.

You’ll find more information on the AI Synthesis website.
