For many, being able to record on their iPad is the way forward. Either it inspires creativity or it offers flexibility wherever you are, even where there isn’t a power source. Some audio interface manufacturers are offering specific iPad connectivity solutions, but what about the interface you already have? Now you can connect up for less than GBP £30!

A new adapter announced by Apple provides a USB3 connection and a separate port for charging and syncing. This means interfaces that are bus-powered and USB hubs can now be powered and connected to an iPad. The only catch is that the larger iPad Pro 12.9″ is the only iPad which supports true USB3 connection speeds. However, this isn’t an issue for most USB audio interfaces, especially if you’re only going to be recording a few channels. Compatible iPads include:

  • iPad with Retina display
  • iPad mini
  • iPad mini 2
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPad mini 4
  • iPad Pro (9.7-inch)
  • iPad Pro (12.9-inch)

The new connector is listed on the UK Apple store for 29 GBP. Now you can use any USB interface with your iPad and app-style DAW’s are becoming more and more advanced. For many, this is probably a case of making the most of what you already have and opening up other possibilities. Presumably, you could connect an Ethernet adaptor and with a potential future release of Dante Virtual Sound Card, you could have Dante-enabled recording or playback from your iPad.
