LD Systems MAILA

Hot off the stage at Frankfurt Prolight + Sound, we bring you news of LD Systems’ new, scalable, PA system solution. So, what does MAILA stand for then? Well, The “Modular All-Round Intelligent Line Array”, as the name suggests, is a modular PA solution. You’ll find a range of loudspeaker “modules” as well as a complimentary matching amplifier module.

Normally, PA speaker components are very much focused on one particular use scenario and target audience size. Just look at our list of 2021s best live gear, and you’ll find portable powered speakers alongside full-size install systems. MAILA however seems to offer “all things to all people”, but can that really be the case?

Modular Magic

Let’s look at those modular “building blocks” first, shall we?

  • MAILA SAT – Satellite line array speaker in a unibody aluminium enclosure housing five 1” tweeters in front of a 6.5” midrange driver
  • MAILA COL – Full-range column module, with four 6.5” active woofers. Additionally includes a 4-channel DSP amplifier with 2.5 kW of total power, which drives both the column itself and the MAILA SAT satellites.

  • MAILA SUB – 2.5kW subwoofer with double 15” drivers in a bandpass enclosure with on-board SysCore® DSP

Additionally, there’s the MAILA SPA which is a dedicated 1.25kW amplifier module with LD Systems’ proprietary SysCore DSP processing. It’s designed to drive up to eight MAILA SAT satellites.

If you want to buy a pre-configured selection of components that are “ready to go” then LD also offers pre-configured packages in the shape of MAILA S, MAILA M, MAILA L, MAILA XL and MAILA XXL

Flexibility and Scalability

It appears then, that with the MAILA system you get a choice of active and passive speakers that can be used as building blocks for any use scenario. Additionally, the press release gives details of LD’s SmartLink+® technology. Apparently, this allows for all sorts of clever system configuration and setup options including wireless control and connectivity.

It seems, to me, that flexibility and adaptability are the key qualities that LD have chosen to focus on with the new MAILA system. I suspect the key customers for MAILA will be hire companies where fast configuration around a client’s needs is key.

Price and Availability

We’re currently awaiting pricing and availability but will update as soon as we know more.

Ballpark pricing of these is around 20,000 USD according to an inside source. They are not currently available in the US, very limited distribution in the EU right now. LD is not a high profile brand, as far as public awareness goes.
Word is these are huge and would require their own warehouse space at the retailer end of things for the US market, that’s just not in the plans right now given the limited demand for them.

They are a very cool design and hope Adam Hall & LD are successful with them.
