Physical Audio Preparation: Physical modeling plug-in with MPE support
Physical Audio released a new instrument derived from its physical modeling pursuits. Staying in the spirit of the developer’s excellent Spring and Plate reverbs, Preparation generates the sound of ‘prepared’ strings and combines it with MPE support for advanced expression.

Physical modeling generates sounds ranging between ‘realistic’ and ‘out of this world’ which cannot be produced via conventional methods. Developer Physical Audio is exploring this form of synthesis in its plug-ins and introduced a new one called Preparation.
Two elements are being modeled here. The first is strings, which is quite common for physical modeling. The second is an element which prepares them and causes collisions. If the spring rattles become too much to handle, you can switch off the element.
As a synthesizer, Preparation generates 8 voices. Each individual voice pairs with the simulations of strings and rattle elements. The special collision modeling takes care of the resulting sounds in real-time.
In addition to the usual parameters (such as tone and sustain), you can also adjust non-linearity and inharmonicity. You can hear in the audio examples that things can get rowdy. The “rattle” element lets you define the masses of both spring ends, the distance to the strings, and additional properties such as stiffness, edgedness, strength and string position. Finally, there are a few extras such as low-shelf EQ, chorus, overdrive, and reverb effects.

MIDI-CC lets you map a controller to the aforementioned parameters, as well as the vibrato and the position at which to pluck the strings. Paired with an MPE controller, Preparation becomes a very expressive instrument. All in all, the synthesizer is quite experimental and potentially very loud. That’s not to say Preparation is incapable of subtlety. With deliberate tweaking, a powerful synth engine like this can produce pretty much everything.
