The new Line 6 DL4 Mk II was leaked accidentally by Guitar World magazine, and so we already knew it was coming. Now officially released, has this updated delay/looper got what it takes to become a classic?

Line 6 DL4 Mk II

It has taken 23 years to replace the original Line 6 DL4, which I think is a great run for the delay/looper pedal. Now it is back, in the same green livery as the original. This new DL4 Mk II offers modern delays which originate from the HX series, plus all the original DL4 delays.

You will be familiar with the overall layout if you ever used the original pedal. Therefore, it will feel like home for anyone that has ever tweaked the old DL4. Let’s take a look at what has been updated in this new expanded 2022 version of the pedal.

More Presets

You have 6 presets that the pedal can access, and a further 122 more that can be accessed via MIDI. Four footswitches control the pedal, plus six rotary knobs. The first knob on the left side of the pedal is for accessing the various delays on offer, plus a LEGACY button to access the older delay models. Then you have the familiar TIME/SUDIV, REPEATS, TWEAK, TWEEZ, and MIX controls.

Better Connectivity

Let’s have a look at the rear panel of the unit. You now bet connectivity for an expression pedal, a Mic input with Level control, plus mono/stereo jack inputs and outputs, and full-sized MIDI In/Out ports, plus a handy USB C port. This 2022 version no longer has a battery compartment, so it is a lot smaller. Which is a good thing, as no one really needs batteries these days, because power supplies are generally better for the environment.

Expandable Looping

The DL4 MK 11 has onboard memory providing up to 240 seconds of recording time, which is pretty good. However, this is now expandable for up to several hours using an optional microSD card. I can see this being a huge deal for many creative players because it is a great upgrade over the original.

Overall, I think this new smaller, lighter 2022 version of this classic could be a winner for anyone needing a flexible delay/looper for their rig. Because it adds some real benefits which all sound easy to use, which should result in a very creative tool for musicians.

Functionally it seems great but; man that is an ugly f*cking pedal.

For that I’m price, I’m super happy with my Boss DD200 – I mean I was anyway but that 400+ tag is too steep, IMO.
