The Knifonium Modular FX opens up a world of creative effects processing with a range of modules for shaping and colouring sounds in different ways.
Knif Audio is a boutique manufacturer based in Finland, which takes the no-compromise route with audio and instrument designs. This time, rather than using tubes exclusively, FETs, IC op amps, and discrete transistors were implemented for the most part in the design to save space and reduce the heat factor.
Knifonium Modular FX
Besides the five effects modules, there are three utility modules, including a dual mic pre with Lundahl transformers on the input stage and NOS tubes. Here, you have a choice of XLR mic level or TRS DI inputs for instruments and all the basic mic pre functions, such as pad, phantom power, high-pass filter, and polarity, as well as two gain controls per channel.
There is also a power supply module with a high-tension function and a dual-channel headphone module with mono, stereo, and crossfeed monitoring modes. For colouration, there is a dual-channel six-stage phaser module, created with six tubes and 12 opto isolators, and a dual filter bank with saturated inductors and tube amps.
Knif Audio’s bucket brigade delay has also been adapted into a module for this project, with its incredible tube distortion stages, and there is a tube amplified spring reverb module designed with mu metal shielded reverb tanks for low noise. Then, to add further expression and movement to the effects, there is a sample and hold and envelope follower module.
This lets you shape the onset of the effects you’re using and add some animation to specific parts of the sound. Overall, this Modular FX unit is a mighty impressive undertaking, and a system that is sure to produce some truly unique sounds. very tastefully curated. considering it has a bunch of tubes all over the place, Lundahl transformers for preamps I imagine the price will be very very premium.
