Knif Audio released a plug-in emulating the Soma passive tube mastering EQ. The release comes in via Plugin Alliance and, until February 1 2022, it is available exclusively to subscribers.
Knif Audio Soma EQ plug-in
While the venerable Pultec and Manley Massive Passive remain the emblematic passive tube EQs, there’s plenty more where they come from. Such designs tend to be great at broad tonal shaping and audio sweetening, and Soma is no different. Knif Audio’s creation is geared towards mastering with its comparatively cleaner tone and opportunity for precise EQ adjustments.
Soma is also the first passive tube EQ with “Real Q Adjustment” which is an attempt to overcome some traditional passive EQ shortcomings. Knif Audio explained that changing the bandwidth control on a conventional passive EQ inadvertabtly increases or reduces the amount of boost or cut applied, thus leading to unexpected changes in EQ curves. It addressed this problem with the proprietary Real Q Adjustment design.
Knif Audio also opted to dial back the inherent saturation of tube circuits in the name of tonal flexibility. Not any and all tracks need to bask in the tube sheen and warmth of a Pultec to sound right. But if you want some of that good stuff, simply drive the Soma EQ a bit harder.
For its plug-in reincarnation, Knif Audio enriched the Soma EQ design with extra features such as the ability to increase or decrease the drive applied at the input and output stages. There are also further mastering tools, such as a Mono Maker, Stereo Width control, and additional options for TMT (the component modeling engine borrowed from brainworx).
