Effects rack plug-ins have been wildly popular this year. Now, Italian hardware and software manufacturer IK Multimedia is throwing its coins in the fountain. IK introduced MixBox, a rack-based multi-effects plug-in numbering a whopping 70 different effect processors. They are all borrowed from the manufacturer’s T-RackS mastering rig, AmpliTube amp sim and SampleTank instrument module. All the modules have been fit into a familiar-looking virtual 500-series box, and you can freely configure them per your wishes.

IK Multimedia MixBox plug-in collection

With the new MixBox collection, IK Multimedia has wheeled out a real Swiss Army knife of multi-effect plug-ins. What the developer has done is to reduce the effects known from T-RackS, AmpliTube and SampleTank to the condensed size of rack modules. This means that a huge number of effect chains can be created quickly. And they should help with any sort of mixing, mastering, and sound design.

With over 600 presets, the user is more than well equipped to find the right settings. Dynamics processors, equalizers, filters, modulations, complete channel strips, saturation, reverb, delay and distortion effects, as well as amp simulations are all included in the bundle. The well-known reverb effects have also been tweaked. Here, you get four new algorithms.

Up to eight processors can be connected in series per plug-in instance. In standalone operation, you can even use eight complete racks (each with eight modules) for live mixing. Graphically, all modules recall hardware versions in 500-series format. That means easy, intuitive operation of all effects (simply drag-and-drop the modules). Anyone who’s familiar with the quality and selection of the developer’s effect plug-ins knows how the effects processors in MixBox will work. All in all, this is a well-rounded and very interesting package!

Prices and dates

IK Multimedia MixBox is currently available on the manufacturer’s website at an introductory price of EUR 229 instead of EUR 347.98. These prices include European VAT. The plug-in runs on macOS 10.10 or higher and Windows 7 or higher standalone, as AU, VST, AAX and VST3 in 64 bit. A demo version is also available for download on the website.

I wonder if they’ll continue to install Custom Shop trojan, and push spam on their users, like they do with TRex MAX.

After the experience with MAX, I hesitate to try anything from IK.
