The Heritage Audio LANG P.LANE 436 is a recreation of a famous modified ALTEC 436C tube compressor used by The Beatles back in the 1960s.
Made in Madrid, Heritage Audio is known for creating recording solutions that combine the best aspects of vintage and modern designs. The Spanish manufacturer has just expanded its line of LANG ELECTRONICS gear, so let’s find out about the new offerings.
Heritage Audio LANG P.LANE 436
The P.LANE 436 is a modern version of a classic British vari-mu tube compressor, which was sought-after for the musical character of its sound and the way it preserved the high frequency range of transients while gently shaping them. With the P.LANE 436, Heritage Audio has done a thorough job, including features from the original 436C as well as the “London Mod” version.
This includes six selectable settings for attack times, six for DC threshold levels, five hold and six recovery times, plus a unique “SuperFast” setting, which is suitable for modern compression applications. With the Attack control, you can go from 15 ms or slower, while the DC threshold knob will take you from a classic ALTEC compressor sound all the way to limiting.
Meanwhile, the Recovery control goes from 300 ms all the way to 6 seconds with hold positions in between each setting. The internal circuitry matches the spec of the original design with 3 vacuum tubes (1 x NOS 6H5P, 1 x JJ E88CC, 1 x NOS 6AL5), and custom-designed transformers from Heritage Audio on the input and output stages.
In addition to the P.LANE 436, Heritage Audio has also released the SILVERR 47® dual-channel tube mic preamp and DI based on a legendary British design from the same era, with a 30 dB gain range and a unique No Feedback (NFB) gain setting that introduces a healthy dose of tasty harmonic distortion.
