Guild has just announced a new Jumbo Junior acoustic bass guitar. The word Junior refers to the short scale length: it’s a mere 23¾”. Yet its maker also promises some big bass tones. How will it fare? It looks like it can handle more than you might think.

This new short scale acoustic bass doesn’t look like it can offer much in the way of low bass tones at first glance. The official demo video, however, suggests that there might be more on offer here than meets the eye (or ear).

First, let’s take a look at the specs. The Jumbo Junior bass is built with a solid Sitka spruce top with arched flamed maple for the back and sides, an ebony fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle and mother-of-pearl rosette. The tortoiseshell pickguard suits the simple, classy look of the bass.

Guild has fitted the model with their AP-1 Active Acoustic Piezo pickup. The intention here is to make the instrument flexible, allowing you to ‘plug in’ easily. That would make this a good choice as a travel instrument, and if it can work well in a variety of scenarios, all the better.

Travelling man

The Jumbo Junior Bass comes in a padded Guild Deluxe Gig Bag and the overall build quality looks great, judging by the promo material. On the face of it, I would be quite tempted to pick up one of these, as I haven’t seen any other short scale acoustic bass guitars to challenge it. If you have, let us know in the comments section.

It’s a bit of a niche market, however. If you move around and love to play, this could be great for you. Or you may have smaller hands and need a good quality acoustic bass suited to your needs. For the money, I am quite impressed by the sound and specs of instrument. It may be a great fit for some players.

It’s great but does not come with a case or bag. Can’t help but notice in the review video that he removes the bass from a gig bag of some type, What about that Guild? Which bag is it that fits this odd dimension instrument?
