EVH has just announced a Limited Edition Wolfgang Special in Satin Black with a sassafras body and a very nice arched top, taking a modern guitar design in a new direction.

The Wolfgang Special is an archtop version of one of EVH’s best-known designs, most recently seen at NAMM in a model featuring an ebony neck and Ice Blue Metallic finish. This new model uses a softer tone wood for the arched top and body, namely sassafras. That puts a new spin on this design, with the wood grain texture showing through the finish. Ace!

Sassafras supposedly has a more “shimmery highs, creamy mids and lows and excellent note articulation”, according to the EVH site. I have never tried it myself and I’d be interested to see what players report when they start shipping and reviews hit our screens.

Baked Maple

Another interesting aspect of this model is the graphite-reinforced bolt-on quarter sawn baked maple Wolfgang neck with graphite reinforcement rods to add stiffness. It has a modern, playable 12”-16” compound radius with a baked maple fingerboard loaded with 22 jumbo frets and black dot inlays. I have a few Wolfgang models and they all have great necks. The profile is super comfortable and they feel great in your hand.

The EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 humbuckers are both mounted directly to the body and wired via a three-way switch into a single volume and tone control. EVH have used 500K EVH Bourns low-friction pot and treble bleed circuit here, along with a tone control with 250K EVH Bourns high friction pot. That should make for easy, fast volume swells and a tone control that resists accidental changes.

Another quality feature is the decked Floyd Rose locking trem that should provide great tonal transfer and stability. Plus you have the EVH D-Tuna that lets you drop that low E down to a D at the flick of a switch, handy for quick re-tuning on the fly.

A good-looking new Wolfgang Special from EVH, this one – especially with all that blacked out hardware melding with the satin black finish.

RRP – USD 1399
