Error Instruments has had other Loopmans (loopmen?) in both desktop and Eurorack form. They had built-in recording, radios and other features that made them ideal for the studio. The Loopman Field Player streamlines the idea into a playful, portable and compact form for experimental cassette tape action out in the world.

It is just a player, it doesn’t record, but it does have other interesting qualities. You’ve got speed control on the single big knob which can also be controlled by control voltage via a patch socket or a light sensor built into the control panel. There’s a gate output and a gate input for switching the outputs for granular, strobing or just messing about. On the control panel you’ll find a Eurorack level mono output for routing through other gear or on the side there’s a regular stereo output for your headphones. The cord is there so you can hang it around your neck as you traverse our environment – groovy!

You can get the Loopman Field Player with or without a cover and you can also slide the side open if you want to spool a tape loop outside of the cassette.

With the increasing amount of artists releasing on cassette these days, this machine gives you the usefulness of a Walkman while inviting you to mess about with the music. I love the idea that the speed could vary in response to the changing light of your environment just by walking about with it around your neck.
