Ernie Ball Music Man has added a new Rorschach Red Buckeye Burl finish to its Jason Richardson Cutlass signature model. This eye-catching look is available for both 6-string and 7 -string versions. The 7-String version we covered last year looked great, but it looks even better in this new finish!

The new Jason Richardson Cutlass looks stunning in its new Rorschach Red Buckeye Burl finish and gold hardware. As usual, Ernie Ball Music Man has done a stellar job on these guitars. They feature a 5-bolt highly figured roasted maple neck with gunstock oil and a hand-rubbed special wax blend finish. If you’ve ever played an EBMM neck with this finish, you’ll know that it feels great in the hand.

The ebony fretboard has 24 medium jumbo stainless steel frets and a relatively flat 15″ radius. This should translate to smooth vibrato and bends. As usual with EBMM you get that fantastic trem system, which is paired with a set of Schaller M6-IND locking tuners. Tuning stability should be no problem on this guitar.

The body is made of alder with a Buckeye Burl top and finished in the new Rorschach Red high gloss polyester colour. It almost looks like an opal from some angles, with a fiery look to it in the photos I have seen.

Versatile Switching

Both versions come loaded with a pair of Music Man Custom humbuckers, which use a ceramic magnet in the neck and bridge positions. These are wired via a three-way selector, and single push/pull volume and tone controls. The push/pull on the volume control adds up to 20dB of boost, while the push/pull on the tone control splits the coils.

6-String or 7-String

As an Ernie Ball Music Man, I expect the build quality to be exceptional. And the Rorschach Red Buckeye Burl finish looks really nice, and works well with the gold hardware and the natural edge binding. I think it will appeal to many players looking for a high spec twin humbucker modern instrument. Plus, you have the option of getting either a 6- or a 7-string model.  I wonder if we might see a version of this model filter down to the company’s Sterling range, as we did with his previous 7-string model.

You can hear the guitar in action in the official demo video below, or follow the link to read the full specifications over on the Ernie Ball Music Man website.

RRP – GBP 3699 / USD 3299 for the six-string model, and GBP 3899 / USD 3499 for the seven-string.
