Emerging out of the darkness is the third version of the Erica Synths Black performance rig. Pulling in modules old and new to form a superb box of sounds and exploration.
Prebuilt modular systems?
I’ve not always been convinced that buying a complete system is a wise decision. It’s perhaps better to build a system gradually, learning and evolving as you go. A whole system in one go would seem mind-boggling and overwhelming to a beginner, but why would this be your first system? However, Erica Synths are starting to win me over with these curated systems and I find myself drooling over this latest version.
What I’ve come to understand is that Eurorack is a messy business. You can lurch from module to module, trying an idea and sometimes keeping it, sometimes discarding it in an eternal search for that perfect combination. Why not let some serious modular experts make some decisions for you. And they are not just some bloke off the internet, Erica Synths are all performers and musicians as well as deep thinkers into sound design, electronics and motorbikes. Who better to buy a complete system from?
Black System III
To my eyes this is most coherent and musically focused system to date. You’ve got the amazing Black Sequencer running the show, you’ve got digital and analog waveforms, you’ve got hands-on joystick modulation, you’ve got effects and lots of VCAs. It’s very much pandering to the familiar synthesizer formula while giving you loads of room for modulation. The focus appears to be on the melodic and you’ll find no drum specific modules or space devoted to noise – this is for making tunes.
