Steve Vai has been playing Ibanez JEM guitars for 35 years, but it turns out he has a lot more guitars in his collection! A new video uploaded to YouTube this week shows some amazing instruments and includes of their stories, as told by Mr Vai.

Harmony Hut

Vai is famous for playing his white EVO JEM signature model on almost everything. Along with FLO it is one of his most recognisable guitars in recent years. Once upon a time he was also famous for playing his Green Meanie. That guitar gets a mention during the video as well.

This new video was filmed in conjunction with Reverb and during the short film Steve Vai explains why he goes for certain models. His view is to use guitars with a unique voice or set of features. The guitars all live in Steve’s Harmony Hut – and there are lot of them!

The video also metions his work with Grover Jackson at Charvel, the guitars gifted to Vai by players like Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani.

Stardust

I also like the fact that he has a Mick Ronson clone Les Paul Custom. He wanted to buy Rono’s original Ziggy Stardust era guitar, but it was too expensive.

And, of course, we get to see the new signature Ibanez PIA model revealed during Winter NAMM earlier this year. There are also a few weird and wonderful variations on his signature JEM model as well, including some stunning one-off models made exclusively for him.

My advice, put the kettle on, make a cuppa and check out the video in full below.

I’ve been waiting for this for years.
