EMMA’s Discumbobulator 2 is a new incarnation of the renowned Danish autowah/envelope filter. With the original pedal pushing 20 years old, it was about time for an update! Fans of cool, funky filtered sounds will be licking their lips here, so let’s take a look at what EMMA is offering this time around.
The original Discumbobulator was an autowah/envelope filter pedal with a simple interface featuring Sensitivity, Width and Attack knobs, plus a switch for Up/Down. While the new functions on the DB-2 seem subtle, they should also prove very useful. Version two of this classic orange-coloured pedal now comes with four main controls for Boost, Width, Attack and Sense that set how the filter reacts. One of the two footswitches on the front is used to turn the effect on, while the other engages the 10dB independent Boost function. The Up/Down Drive switch to control the filter’s travel is now a push-in button in the centre of the pedal.
EMMA has extended the frequency range on the v2, and the website says it works not only on guitar but also bass, keys or even “flutes or violins”. Apparently it can handle fast, fluid note tracking on either single note runs or more complex chords “without getting mushy”. It’s also true bypass (as you’d expect).
Cool liquid filtering
This pedal should be capable of producing a wide range of sounds, from old-school auto-wah tones to modern filter sweeps. The new design seems geared adding flexibility (in filter/autowah terms) while keeping the user interface relatively simple. The new extra controls should manage to add more control without making the pedal a pain to use.
EMMA has also dropped the price from USD $249 to $199, so nothing to complain about there. More control, less money and lots of cool filtered, funky sounds – what’s not to like? This new version of the Discumbobulator pedal looks set to be a hit.
