EB-Blasphemy: Free Aphex Twin Glitch Multi-Effects Plug-in
Random glitch sounds for electronic music producers
The ‘free’ (or better: ‘pay what you want’) plugin EB-Blasphemy by developer Ewan Bristow is an impressive generative multi-effects processor designed specifically for editing and transforming drum loops. Aimed at experimental and ‘glitchy’ Aphex Twin-style breakbeat productions, it offers sonic possibilities that are ideal for breakcore or other electronic music genres that rely more on unconventional rhythmic structures and a wide range of effects.
All about EB-Blasphemy Plug-in
A Freeware With Spectral Effects for Breakcore and Aphex Twin Fans
the centrepiece of EB-Blasphemy is an intelligent sample slicer. Although designed as an ‘Amen break chopper’, it can slice any sample – from drum loops to vocals to synth riffs – into random, tempo-synced slices. A randomisation control allows you to create rhythmic variations, with a range of effects options to tweak each slice. The plugin is easy to use: simply activate the Gen option for generative playback, press the Trigger button to start the sample playback process, and the plugin will immediately begin generating loops in new rhythmic forms.
In the effects section, EB-Blasphemy offers a versatile range of ‘distorting, spectral and experimental’ sound tools controlled by probability sliders. The Resonator, for example, can be influenced by two parameters that determine the probability of its activation and its delay time. The Bitcrusher creates digital distortions and artefact-rich effects, while a Reverser Slice can reverse directions.
Creative Multi-Effects Plug-in for Slicing Drum Loops, Rhythmic Breaks & Noise Effects
There is also a spectral gate and an envelope follower-triggered noise generator that adds an additional noise-based layer to the breaks. This effects section allows for completely random and dynamic modulation of the sounds, creating unpredictable and truly experimental soundscapes.
The built-in timestretcher adds another layer of experimental sound design. Simply turning up the ‘HT’ knob increases the probability that a slice will be stretched. This adds rhythmic depth and creates altered dynamics that are particularly popular in breakcore and IDM production. There are also two sample buttons, which incorporate the ‘Woo!’ and ‘Yeah!’ samples from the classic ‘Think Break’ – a creative detail that will be particularly cool for the jungle and breakbeat scene.
Bristow describes EB-Blasphemy as a ‘sound destruction machine’, which is an apt summary of the plugin’s potential. It is aimed at sound designers and musicians looking for creative ways to reinterpret loops and drum samples beyond traditional effects processing and to create complex rhythms.
