Live sound environments can be noisy and chaotic, and you don’t always have time to drop the fader or mute microphones to avoid feedback and ambient noise that may be picked up. With the PW-IRMM-01 Mic Mute Infrared Mic Sensor, however, the device automatically cuts the signal when no one is in front of the microphone.

Conveniently, the Mic Mute operates on 48V phantom power, so all you need to do is activate this from your live console or stage box. It’s also really easy to set up, as it connects directly via XLR to a standard handheld live microphone. The genius of the design allows you to customize the operating range of the infrared sensor.

More Information

When you’re standing in front of the mic at your usual comfortable distance, you’ll know you’re in range of the sensor when the red LED turns on. From there, you can adjust the dial to suit a specific performer, and there is a useful bypass button to deactivate the mic mute when you’re performing.

Because the Mic Mute offers such a straightforward operating procedure, it’s useful in so many situations. From live music concerts, theatrical productions, houses of worship, and public speeches, you can configure the device quickly during sound check, so that your settings are locked in and ready for the show.

Overall, the Mic Mute is a well-thought-out little gizmo, and I think there should be at least one of these in every live sound engineer’s toolbox. Moreover, if you have a few on your stage mics for larger-scale shows, it can take some of the pressure off because you don’t need to be constantly muting mics between songs anymore.
