We’ve just heard that BOSS is reissuing the infamous OD-1 Overdrive, PH-1 Phaser and SP-1 Spectrum pedals marking the pedal maker’s 40th year in business. They’re to be sold together in a limited edition box set called the BOX-40 – we’d be surprised if this reissue didn’t find lots of takers, given that it includes some recreations of sought-after vintage gear.
The three pedals are reissues of BOSS’s first ever compact guitar pedals, so we expect these to be popular with punters. The Spectrum SP-1, in particular, is one of BOSS’s rarest pedals, with a small initial production run.
Spectrum SP-1 is a single-band parametric EQ with a fixed level boost which was only made for a very short time. The originals now command very high prices on the second-hand market and are highly collectable.
PH-1 Phaser is a recreation of the BOSS four-stage phase pedal – this is the first modulation pedal in this series of compact pedals, preceding the later Chorus and Flanger effects.
OD-1 Overdrive was a rich-sounding, tube-inspired overdrive pedal which later evolved into the SD-1 Super OverDrive pedal, which is still in production today.
Each BOX-40 set of three pedals comes in a cool presentation box with numbered message card, and the sets are limited to just 1,500 units worldwide. We expect that they will probably sell out pretty fast, as we reckon collectors will love them.
They certainly aren’t cheap, however! The pedals are all made in Japan and although they are recreations of vintage gear, they have been ‘modernised’ with certain upgrades, including compatibility with a standard 9V power supply, an internally reinforced battery clip and an LED on/off indicator.
