Behringer BM-17 Frequency Box: Analog Synth Tones
More affordable analog madness with another MoogerFooger clone
The BM-17 Frequency Box is the latest BoogerFooger from Behringer, and this time, they are tackling the analog voltage-controlled oscillator with an envelope follower in a box.
BM-17 Frequency Box
The Behringer BM-17 Frequency Box will provide players with interesting effects, all based on an analog-synth-like architecture. By using a VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator) and an envelope follower, this analog pedal can create some very interesting effects.
MF107 Clone
It is a clone of the 1990s MoogerFooger MF107 pedal and should hopefully capture some of the original’s organic, analog madness.
Unlike standard pedals, the BM-17 doesn’t just “process” your sound; it uses your instrument to “pilot” an internal Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO). This creates aggressive, harmonically rich synth tones that react instantly to your playing.
Synth-Like Controls
The VCO allows users to seamlessly switch between Triangle, Saw, Square, and Pulse waveforms with the continuous Waveform control. A nice feature and one where you can experiment a lot, plus users can use the VCO Sync switch to lock the oscillator to the input signal for jagged, laser-like textures.
Then the built-in Envelope Follower lets the pitch sweep and dive based on how hard you pick. Great for adding more just via the dynamics of your playing. Use the FM Amount knob for audio-rate modulation, adding “clangorous” metallic grit and complex sidebands.
Dial in saturation with the Drive knob and use the Mix control to blend your dry signal, a nice way of adding some grit when required.
Control Voltage
The Control Voltage (CV) allows some parameters to be controlled externally, making it perfect for integration with other equipment. This includes Frequency, Wave, Env Amt, and FM Am CV inputs, along with an Audio out, Env Out, Osc Out, and Mix.
Who is it for?
It could be perfect for guitars, bass, and synths, making it widely appealing. Though you will probably want to be the type of musician who loves to experiment and knows their way around CV, or has some synths they can patch it into, etc.
Price & Availability
The Behringer BM-17 Frequency Box is available to order at Thomann, priced $99/£85/€99.
They already have most of the MoogerFooger pedals cloned, and these are also available at Thomann.
