Baby Audio has released Crystalline, a highly tweakable reverb plug-in. Conceived as a modern algorithmic reverb that takes clues from the classics, but adds a lot of creative and unique features, Crystalline gives you precise control over all aspects of the reverb effect.

Baby Audio says that they asked themselves what the developers of the classic algorithmic reverbs by EMT, Lexicon and the like would have done, had they had today’s resources at their disposal. The result is Crystalline, a reverb plug-in that builds on the classics, but offers all sorts of bells and whistles that weren’t possible in the hardware days.

According to Baby Audio, the idea is to give you “unprecedented creative control to shape your reflections”. In addition to familiar controls such as Size, Width and Damping, the plug-in offers a wide range of less common tweaking options for crafting lush and unique reverbs.

Advanced controls for shaping the reverb

The Reflections section lets you set the Room Size, which is independent from the reverb length. This section also offers a Sparkle control for emphasizing high frequencies, and a stereo width control.

In the Depth section, you’ll find a Resolution parameter for controlling the complexity of the algorithm, which also affects the CPU performance. Moreover, this section has a Modulation control for creating pitch variations. There’s also a Shimmer parameter that makes the high frequencies decay more slowly.

Next is a Clean-Up section that not only offers a Damping control, but also a Sides parameter that helps to keep the low end clean by removing stereo information. There’s also a Gate control for creating classic 80s gated reverbs.

Lastly, the Shape section offers a Tone EQ, a Smoothing control for mellowing out harshness and a Transients parameter that focuses the reverb to either the attack or sustain phases of the input signal.

Sync reverb times to the song tempo

Along with this comprehensive set of controls, Crystalline offers the unique ability to sync the reverb start and decay times to the DAW tempo. Baby Audio says that this helps to achieve cleaner mixes, as the reflections feel naturally in sync with the music.

Add to this an integrated Ducker effect that automatically ducks the reverb signal when the incoming signal is playing, along with Reverse and Freeze options, and you’ve got a reverb plug-in that offers pretty much everything one could want from an algorithmic reverb. To sum up, I think that Crystalline looks like an excellent tool to have in your arsenal.

Price and compatibility of the plug-in

Baby Audio Crystalline is now available at Plugin Boutique* for an introductory price of USD 49, down from USD 99. This offer is good through May 16, 2022. When you purchase from Plugin Boutique, they’ll throw in UJAM Virtual Drummer PHAT 2 for free – a USD 99 value!

Crystalline runs on macOS 10.7 or higher (including Apple Silicon) and Windows 7 or higher. It’s available in VST, VST3, AU and AAX formats.
