A few months after resurrecting the sound of old VHS tapes with Super VHS, Baby Audio returns with Comeback Kid. The developers say that they wanted to create an inspiring delay plug-in with “a versatile selection of onboard flavoring tools”, while keeping it simple and easy to use.

At first glance, Comeback Kid has all the essential delay controls: time, feedback, a ping pong mode and a few knobs for various stereo effects. The delay time syncs to the song tempo with straight, dotted and triplet options. In free mode, it is adjustable from 0.01 ms to 2500 ms. The fact that the delay time can be set to really short values means that Comeback Kid should also be capable of various phasing and flanging effects.

In addition to the basic parameters, Comeback Kid comes with various tools for creating interesting and unique delay sounds. The Shaper section offers low cut and high cut filters, as well as attack and sustain knobs for adjusting the transients.

The Flavor section includes more sound mangling options. The Cheap switch activates an 11-bit signal path, which is “modeled after vintage digital units”, Baby Audio says. You can also dial in tape saturation and add modulation with the Swirl knob. Sauce adds some algorithmic reverb to the delay. Even the output section also offers some special options, in addition to independent wet and dry level controls. The Ducking knob lowers the volume of the wet signal while the dry signal is playing. There’s also a mysteriously-named Destiny switch, which gives the delay a “less robotic, more human and unpredictable vibe”, according to Baby Audio.

Those are many tone shaping options for a delay. It looks like Comeback Kid will be a lot of fun to play with. To get you started, the plug-in comes with 61 presets designed by renowned producers and engineers.
