Enter DivKid RND STEP, a high performance 3-channel Sample & Hold module
Ben “DivKid” Wilson’s third module is a 3-channel Sample & Hold featuring 6 separate noise and S&H circuits and offers multiple ways of enjoying and employing randomness in your Eurorack.

Ben’s aim has been to find holes in his workflow and fill them with forehead slappingly useful modules. So far we’ve had the vactrol based Mutes with fantastic momentary switches for mixing up live performance. Then we had Ochd which is a sublime collection of LFOs that can spread themselves all over your rack in any situation. They make you wonder what on earth you did before you had them. Both are 4HP are made in collaboration with different manufacturers. Module number 3 is RND STEP, it’s 4HP and this time made with Steady State Fate (SSF).
RND STEP
The module offers 3 channels of sample & hold. Each channel contains two pink noise generators and two sample & hold circuits which sort of makes 6 channels of S&H in total. However, each of the 3 channels controls a pair which are triggered together by a shared trigger input. In fact the triggers are normalled so you can trigger all 3 channels (and therefore all 6 S&H circuits) and generate 6 unique random voltages with the single trigger input.
Each channel uses one S&H to produce a unipolar (0 to 5v) output and the other to produce a bipolar output (-5 to +5v). They both sample their own pink noise source however the bipolar S&H circuit can sample external audio or CV signals via the “Sample” input.
RND STEP can handle slow trigger rates and sustain a voltage for extended hold times with very high precision. It can also go up to audio rate for some juicy destructive downsampling effects on sampled audio or if you are using the internal noise then it will produce downsampled and clocked noise tones that you can use for modulation, percussion or sound effects.
I think the key feature of RND STEP is Ben’s guide to using it. Sample & Hold is commonly used for simple modulation effects but in his video we get into things like humanising voices, sampling modulation for new melodies, noise percussion, creating overlapping chord tones, auto chordal composition and many other things that I’d never have thought of.
RND STEP is a widely useful module that you didn’t know you needed until DivKid showed you why. And you now know it’s going to become a vital part of your modular workflow.
