AudioKit Pro has released the Digital D1 Hybrid Synth featuring 64 voices of virtual analog and PCM synthesis for the iPad. Inspired by the likes of the Roland D50 and Korg Wavestation but with an awful lot more going on.

The hybrid nature combines virtual analog with PCM samples. Each voice of the massive 64 voice polyphony can be broken down into two layers. Each layer can either be virtual analog or PCM and comes with its own filters, envelope, sample set and note range. You then have 3 LFOs for modulation. The PCM side draws on over 1GB of samples taken from a bunch of synths over 30 years old. Somehow they squeeze all that down to 150mb for the App install.

Other features include an arpeggiator and step sequencer, Ableton Link and a whole stack of effects. It all operates with Audiobus 3 and Inter-App Audio support. The effects and sound engine is all open source and available as DSP code building blocks within AudioKit Pro.

But the beauty of Digital D1 is to be found in the sounds. They are amazingly authentic, touching on all the character of those early digital synthesizers. There are over 300 presets created by the likes of Brice Beasley, Red Sky Lullaby, Electronisounds, Jakob Haq, Matthew Fecher and more. Check out the demo below for a quick step through the first 20 presets or head over to the webpage for a load of sound demos. I’m also enjoying the darkness of the interface.

Digital D1 has not yet appeared in the iTunes store at the time of writing but it should be available today!
