Universal Audio LUNA 3.0: Free DAW Gets an AI Boost and a New Spark Studio Subscription
LUNA Free gets smart tools, Spark Studio brings it all into one subscription
Universal Audio LUNA 3.0 is the biggest update to this DAW, free version included, since it launched back in 2020. That means new smart tools like stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, plus lyric transcription and chord extraction built in collaboration with Moises. Alongside it, UAD Spark Studio launches as a brand-new subscription that brings LUNA Studio and the entire native UAD plugin library together in one package. Both are available right now.
LUNA 3.0 and UAD Spark Studio: All the New Features and Prices
LUNA 3.0: Free DAW, With a Subscription Option on Top
Seven years after launch, LUNA’s 3.0 update is easily its biggest yet, and the focus here is clearly on shrinking the gap between a spontaneous idea and a finished recording. UA CEO Bill Putnam Jr. nails the actual problem: everyone’s had that moment where you hear something in your head, hit record, and the inspiration just evaporates because the tech gets in the way. That’s exactly what LUNA 3.0 is trying to fix. Here’s what the new tools and the new subscription actually look like.
LUNA Play and the New Free Features
The headline new feature in LUNA 3.0 is LUNA Play, essentially a voice-memo app built specifically for making music. Genuinely cool. Instruments get detected automatically, levels get set automatically, and matching UAD plugin presets get suggested right along with it. That lets you isolate individual tracks, jam along with existing songs, or just capture a spontaneous idea, all without any setup beforehand.
On top of that, a whole batch of new functions is landing directly in the free LUNA Free tier: Folder Tracks for organizing and routing audio, a reworked Piano Roll with scale-aware editing, an Adaptive Grid that automatically adjusts to your zoom level, and Clip Gain Automation for detailed level adjustments before the plugin chain. There’s also 4-Track Stem Separation, Record FX (previously exclusive to Apollo interfaces), Strip Silence, Click Track Automation, mono inputs for stereo tracks, plus Chord, Key, and Time Signature Rulers for better orientation inside a project. Wow. That genuinely reads like a full-featured DAW, and it’s still completely free.
LUNA Studio: More Power for 199 Euro
If you want more, there’s LUNA Studio for 199 Euro. On top of everything in LUNA Free, you get LUNA Extensions with tape and console emulations from API, Studer, and Ampex, plus expanded smart tools: 6-Track Stem Separation instead of four, Audio-to-MIDI for turning audio performances into editable MIDI tracks, automatic Lyric Transcription into a time-synced lyrics browser, and Chord Extraction, which drops detected chords straight into LUNA’s Chord Track.
Rounding things out are UAD instruments and plugins, Celemony Tonalic Elements acting as virtual session musicians, Dreamtonics Synthesizer V2 Core for realistic vocal melodies and harmonies, and Topline Vocal Tune for vocals that stay in tune the moment you hit record.
UAD Spark Studio: Everything in One Subscription
Alongside LUNA 3.0, Universal Audio is launching UAD Spark Studio, a completely new subscription model. It includes LUNA Studio plus a growing library of more than 70 native UAD plugins, including titles from Neve, Ampex, and Lexicon, alongside virtual instruments like Minimoog, PolyMAX, and Electra88. CEO Bill Putnam Jr. sums up the idea like this: LUNA, UAD plugins, and instruments are all in one place now, so you spend less time setting things up and more time actually making music. The subscription naturally works with any audio interface.
Price and Availability
LUNA Free is free, and you can grab it directly from the manufacturer’s website. The new LUNA Studio costs 199 Euro as a one-time purchase, available here at Thomann*. UAD Spark Studio costs $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year as a subscription, and already includes LUNA Studio in full.
Feedback on LUNA 3.0 and the New Subscription Model
One thing worth looking at closely before buying: UAD Spark Studio is a subscription, while LUNA Studio has always been available as a straightforward one-time purchase. Whether the subscription actually pays off for you comes down to how many of those 70-plus UAD plugins you’d genuinely use on a regular basis. If you only need a plugin or two here and there, buying LUNA Studio outright is probably still the cheaper route long-term.
