For years, SoundCloud has been the place to share your music and build your very own following as an artist. In 2021, the platform introduced the Fan-Powered Royalties (FPR) streaming system that let artists monetize their streaming numbers, and now SoundCloud is taking its first steps towards direct music purchases.

SoundCloud Track Purchasing

As of this week, SoundCloud rolls out the beta version of this new functionality, so we will only be able to buy tracks from a small group of Artist Pro creators at this stage. Although this concept is in its infancy on the platform, the directive is clear: to make SoundCloud a one-stop system for music discovery, artist interaction, purchasing, and downloading tracks.

This rewards artists who have already spent years building a following, and provides a major incentive for up-and-coming talent still thinking about where they should publish their tracks. According to SoundCloud, this new feature does not take any commission from the sales of tracks, only the appropriate taxes and fees.

More Information

Naturally, the company isn’t making these changes on a whim. The data gathered says that over 250,000 artists have linked 2.4 million tracks to other music platforms, and over 500,000 users have been directed to other services for buying songs. The research also says that 28% of artists who participated in a survey already sell tracks digitally or would like to.

Overall, this new functionality paints a positive picture for artists. While the beta will start with 200 Artist Pro creators in the US with Fan Support enabled, track purchasing will be available this coming fall to all eligible SoundCloud users. The details of whether fans will be able to download tracks as audio files or compressed archives are not yet known, or whether there will be standardized pricing for releases like singles, EPs, and albums.

Of course, the ability to let your fans download archives is more exciting, because you can include additional content or even sell sample packs if you wanted.
