A leak on the Arturia website confirms it: a new drum machine is coming, and it’s called the DrumFreak. The name appeared alongside the note “Sample Baseline,” which already tells us quite a bit. Unlike the analog DrumBrute lineup, Arturia is apparently going sample-based as the sonic foundation for the DrumFreak. What that means in practice, and what the community has been hoping for from a Freak-DNA drum machine, is what we’re digging into here.

Spark got discontinued. The demand for a modern Arturia drum machine never went away.
What else is already locked down internally is unknown. The DrumFreak is still just a name that appeared on the Arturia website without images or further information, not an officially announced product. What a Drum Machine with Freak DNA Would Actually Mean
Arturia’s Freak line started with the MicroFreak* and has grown into a recognizable format with its own character. Digital oscillators paired with an analog filter, a proper modulation matrix, an internal sequencer, and an interface that prioritizes playfulness over convention. That’s the Freak formula.
Apply that to a drum machine and the picture gets interesting fast. Per-voice modulation depth, a step sequencer with Arturia’s familiar extras, and almost certainly a pad-based interface would all follow naturally from the Freak approach. The “Sample Baseline” note points toward a hybrid architecture: samples as the sonic foundation, layered with synthesis, filters, and modulation. That would be a direct response to one of the most consistent criticisms of the DrumBrute line: characterful, yes, but limited in sonic range.
The Community Called It Years Ago
What makes this leak particularly satisfying is that the DrumFreak was never really a surprise to the community. Back in December 2024, user “Synth” posted in the official Arturia Sound Explorers Forum: “It’s been 6 years since Arturia released the Impact. Whilst its form factor and usability is almost perfect IMO, some of the sounds on it leave a lot to be desired. There’s no way they’re not cooking up a DrumFreak, right?”
Over on Mod Wiggler, the wishlist had been circulating even longer: “When Arturia announced the MicroFreak, they said it would be the first in the line of a new Freak range. Would be nice to see a DrumFreak…”
The leak confirms what many had already figured out. When Arturia launched the MicroFreak, they explicitly positioned it as the first of a family. A drum machine was always the obvious missing piece.
What the Community Actually Wants
Reading through years of forum discussions, the wishlist for a new Arturia drum machine is pretty consistent. Better sounds than the DrumBrute Impact is the baseline ask. On top of that: the ability to load your own samples, a deep per-voice modulation matrix, a polyrhythm-capable sequencer, individual outputs, and a compact form factor that holds up on stage. A Freak architecture built on a sample foundation could realistically deliver most of that.
One Thing Is Clear: Speculation Is Still Speculation
A name and a sample reference aren’t enough to draw conclusions about features, pricing, or release timing. What we can say with confidence: Arturia is working on something called the DrumFreak, and it’s visible on their own website.
