AmenBreak VST: The Sample Chopping Plugin You’ve Been Waiting For

Developer Infinite Digits has turned the Amen Break into a plugin! Better yet, the AmenBreak VST is a multi-playhead sample mangler and chopper that lets you go berserk with any sample you throw at it, not just the classic Amen Break.

Simply load a sample of your choice into the plugin, and it’ll automatically get sliced according to the settings. Then, choose one of two modes. In ‘Let’s Go‘ mode, you’re presented with just two big knobs: ‘Amen’ randomizes the order of slices, while ‘Break’ introduces random FX, all the way up to the ‘WTF’ setting. You can also re-slice the sample while it’s playing, and choose from several play modes, including Oneshot, Pingpong, and Looping.

If you want more control, switch to ‘Careful!’ mode, where you can adjust the settings for the various effects in detail. Everything is MIDI-controllable, so you can also map the AmenBreak VST to your favorite MIDI controller and go wild on stage! Genius!

The AmenBreak VST comes in a free and a paid version. The free version includes the complete auto-slicing and playback engine, as well as some basic effects like stutter and tape stop. It’s limited to mono samples, though. The paid version ($29) adds stereo playback, pitch correction, and advanced effects like Braindance, Decimation, and Tunneling.

The AmenBreak VST is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST3, AU, and standalone formats.

More Information

If you don’t know Sinevibes Skew yet, it’s a very unique non-linear reverse delay that can do anything from adding an unusual layer of rhythm to your track to bending the pitch in interesting ways. It records the incoming audio, reverses it, and plays it back in chunks depending on the tempo of your track and the selected note value. The triple playhead design ensures that the pitch effects remain the same across feedback repeat cycles. The chunks can be anything from 1/32 note to 16 bars long, which allows for a wide variety of unique effects.

Skew v2 is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.

Gulf Coast Synthesis Strum Plate: Now Any Sound Can Be an Omnichord

More Information

One of the trademark features of the legendary Omnichord is the strum plate, which allows you to play broken, arpeggiated chords as if you were strumming the strings of a guitar or harp. Strum Plate by Gulf Coast Synthesis is a free MIDI effect that takes this concept to your DAW. Simply hold a chord on your keyboard and use your mouse or the pitch wheel to strum the plate. As you move your mouse cursor, the notes of the chord are triggered in real-time. The octave range is adjustable from 1 to 8 (!) octaves.

Strum Plate also has a note length control that responds to the mod wheel, so you can play anything from short plucks to long, sustained notes.

Strum Plate is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats.

And if you prefer the real thing, you can get the Suzuki Omnichord OM-108 from Thomann*.

Strum Plate kind of cries out for an iOS version so you could physically strum it.

Anybody know of an iPad app like this?
