Ah, MIDI. The cause of and solution to all of life’s problems. I kid, of course, but sometimes MIDI can be a royal pain in the out port. So many connections, so many formats. Take USB MIDI, for example. Designed to send MIDI messages over the same cable you use with your computer, it’s all fine and dandy unless you don’t want to use a computer at all. How is the average DAWless warrior supposed to play one of the modern, small instruments that only come with USB MIDI?

Leave it to Behringer to provide a solution. And that would be the Behringer Go MIDI Host, a MIDI interface to convert USB MIDI to five-pin DIN MIDI.

No Muss No Fuss

The Behringer Go MIDI Host is simplicity itself. The tiny box offers five-pin DIN MIDI in and out ports on one side, and USB-C power and MIDI data ports on the other. That’s it.

The tiny MIDI interface is class-compliant, meaning it doesn’t require drivers or software to work. Just plug it in and you’re on your way. It’s also bus-powered, so all you need is some kind of USB power to get it up and running.

Connectivity Examples

“The Behringer Go MIDI Host bridges the gap between traditional MIDI synthesizers and modern USB devices,” says Behringer. “Expand the capabilities of your setup and connect your USB MIDI controllers and other USB MIDI devices to traditional MIDI hardware, such as synthesizers, drum machines, or sequencers.”

Along with playing DIN-less MIDI devices from a USB controller sans computer, other possibilities include remote-controlling the knobs on a MIDI mixer from a controller, or even getting around the loss of compatibility with older devices, a near-constant problem for Mac users.

Price and Availability

Behringer Go MIDI Host is now available at Thomann* for $24.50 / £21.40 / €25.

Nice, but it would be more useful if it allowed connecting several USB MIDI devices between themselves since more and more of them come with USB MIDI only.
