Bitwig Studio users can now rejoice: Melbourne Instruments’ ROTO-CONTROL motorized controller can now control the DAW perfectly. The integration into Bitwig Studio doesn’t require any complicated configuration – and that’s the way it should be – because track names, colors and parameter assignments are automatically taken from the active session. Very cool!
Central to the workflow is the MIX mode, which dynamically synchronizes the ROTO-CONTROL displays with Bitwig Studio. All relevant information appears directly on the controller’s high-resolution displays. Equally impressive is the PLUGIN mode, in which parameters can be saved permanently with a single “Learn” command. Even changing computers doesn’t change anything because the assignments are stored directly on the device. Wow!
ROTO-CONTROL and Bitwig Studio Grow Together: Now in Open Beta Testing
This way of working not only simplifies the creative handling of complex projects, but also reduces technical hurdles in the production process. With its well thought-out concept of touch sensitivity, motorized faders, haptics and memory management, the controller clearly positions itself as the link between the DAW and the user. ROTO-CONTROL is a Studio Master Controller
ROTO-CONTROL’s MIX mode provides intuitive integration with Ableton Live by directly synchronizing track names and parameters. In MIDI mode, the controller can be used independently or with external hardware, while the Motion Recorder lets you creatively record and play back movements and parameter automation.

While the company’s synthesizers feature motorised knobs that dynamically adjust to preset values, this new product could make a splash as a DAW controller.

With the Nina and Delia synthesizers, Melbourne Instruments has impressively demonstrated how an innovative user interface can simplify sound design and music making. The motorised knobs, which are seamlessly linked to the synthesizers’ modulation matrix and engine settings, offer a unique combination of precision and ease of use. Makes perfect sense so long as it’s at least reasonably priced with the global economic turbulence in mind. Most desirable looking MIDI controller since the Touché.
It’s all sorts of brilliant. Their synth have haptic feedback and a lot of clever features…. but it’s VERY expensive (4000€ for a desktop). This one should be pricey too.
What’s the point of motorized knobs? Never heard of endless knobs with a LED ring? Behringer sells the XTouch Mini for like 70 Eur.
