There’s a great little promotional video showing these two old boys of synthesizer history meeting up in a bar and coming up with the OB-6 on the back of napkin. It’s pure class – just like the OB-6 – and they’ve given us everything we wanted. The best way I can think of to describe the Tom Oberheim sound is to imagine yourself watching a classic 80’s B movie – the music, the synth wash of pads and dramatic stabs, the theme to Airwolf – that’s the Oberheim sound. It’s generated with 2 VCO’s, VCA and a 2-pole filter and Dave Smith has integrated it with studio quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer and modern modulation to create a stunning new poly synth.
The OB-6 sound engine is inspired by the original SEM. You have 2 VCO’s and a sub per voice with continuously variable waveshapes. The classic 2-pole, state-variable, resonant filter provides low-pass, high-pass, band and notch functionality. And then on and through the VCA’s to complete the all-analogue signal path.
The polyphonic step sequencer gives you 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step with external clock syncing options. Or you can switch to unison, chord, key or arppegiation modes. Virtually all the functions and parameters are available to your fingers on the front panel. With 500 presets and 500 user destinations you’ve got a lot to play with. It also has a handy “live panel” mode where it switches to whatever the current controls are set at, so what you see is what you hear.
