NAMM 2023 just wouldn’t be complete without something tasty and analogue from SSL, and the B-Series Dynamics Module for the 500-series format is precisely that.
The revered console sound of the 1980s can be partly attributed to the design of SSL’s 4000 series channel strips. Today, the new B-Series Module brings you the compressor and expander/gate sections from the 4000 B-Series consoles, which were known for their subtle colouration.

With the B-Series modeled circuitry, the module brings plenty of precision sound-shaping potential to your lunchbox. For starters, there are three stepped compression ratios; 2:1, 4:1, and 10:1, as well as the DS (de-ess) setting with fast attack and release times.
When engaged, the ratio control also brings the automatic makeup gain into play, which is a useful touch. Apart from DS and auto, there are four selectable release times, including 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 seconds.

Meanwhile, the expander/gate section has threshold and range parameters, as well as a release control with five settings; 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 seconds.
Both the compressor and exp/gate sections can be individually bypassed and there is a low-cut filter and a stereo link switch for ensuring stereo image integrity when using paired modules.
Pricing and availability:
According to SSL, the B-Series Dynamics Module will be available midway through 2023 (which is soon!). We estimate the price will be around the 7-800 dollar mark and you’ll be able to order it through your favourite online retailer.
