Moog’s iOS Minimoog Model D emulation has been released onto macOS as an AU3 plugin so you can use it in your DAW. Sadly, it’s only for Apple computers.

Minimoog Model D

The iOS emulation of the Minimoog Model D was originally released over four years ago. Moog has a great reputation for delivering fantastic software instruments and emulations of their own gear. Animoog on iOS was one of the first decent synths on the platform and remains one of the best. The Minimoog and Model 15 that followed are equally splendid. The Model 15 was the first to make the leap onto macOS last year, and so the fact that the Model D has joined it is no big surprise.

The Minimoog is considered one of the greatest and most influential synthesizers of all time. We’ve all got an emulation of some sort knocking around in our plugin folders. But you can’t beat the authenticity that cries out from this product.

Along with everything you’d expect from that classic bank of oscillators, mixer, ladder filter and modifiers, Moog has added a sprinkle of additional goodies. It has over 160 presets, the polyphony is expanded to 4-notes, it has a groovy arpeggiator and a real-time looper with unlimited overdubs. It has a stereo ping-pong delay and Bender modulation effect and the ability to generate random patches.

As with the Model 15, it is actually only in AU3 format, but Moog has supplied a free VST/AU2 Wrapper so that it can run in other DAWs like Cubase and Ableton Live. It’s a shame that doesn’t run to making it compatible with Windows. For a limited time, the Minimoog with be available for $29, although if you already own the iOS version, then you can have the macOS one for nothing.

Both Model 15 and the Minimoog sound good, I like them for iPad. Model 15 is buggy on my M1 Macbook Pro- hung notes, refusal to work well with Logic arpeggiator, too many issues to keep it on my system. And the Model 15 UI is exactly the same on Macbook as it is on the iPad, meaning lots of scrolling, no attempt to take advantage of the added real estate. I’ll demo this Minimoog app today, I hope they’ve done a better job with this one.

If you already have the iOS version, you can get the Mac OS version for free; but it doesn’t look that way when you first get to the App Store. You’ll see a price to purchase it, but if you sign in with the same account as your iOS purchase, it will eventually say that you get the update for free.

Sounds great; I’d also love to see them add on features from other Moogs like the envelope reset from the Sun 37.

Running Catalina. Is there any way to get this to work on that machine? I can’t upgrade to a newer OS 🙁
