Always room for another electric piano, or so it seems. Following on from the Waves Electric 88 Rhodes style piano back in July the Electric 200 Piano brings in that Wurlitzer vibe. It’s the sort of sound you’ll find on classics by Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Pink Floyd.

Waves have attempted to capture the “bite, bark and reed tone” of the instrument. They sampled two different pianos and then sort of mixed the two together to find that elusive perfect tone. Waves like to sample all the internal mechanisms and so you can mix in hammer sounds, key movement and the noise of the physical creation of the sound. It has the potential of bringing a high level of realism and authenticity to the player.

As with the Electric 88 there’s a rack of sympathetic effects that sits on top of the piano. There’s a phaser and tremolo of course but also autopan, chorus and reverb, all with just a couple of knobs to keep things smooth and easy.

With the Electric 88 I criticised Waves for the underwhelming promotional video – this is not the case here. The video is amazing. I instantly love the tinkly sound that comes in and then they layer up the rasping, heavier sound as the music develops its groove. That’s a lot more like it!
