United Studio Technologies has announced the UT FET47 condenser microphone. It’s the company’s first product, and it looks like they’re off to a great start. A no-compromise, USA-built U47 FET clone for USD 800? Tell me more!

United Studio Technologies is a new company based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They say that the UT 47FET is the result of several years of R&D, testing and engineering, and that they wanted “to make a microphone that you’ll still love 20 years from now”. Despite the high level of craftsmanship, which is quite obvious just by looking at it, the UT 47FET comes with a moderate price tag of USD 799. That puts it in the price range of the Warm Audio WA47, which, along with its little brother WA47jr, cannot claim to be made in the USA.

Heiserman HZ-series K47 capsule

The UT 47FET features a Heiserman HZ-series K47 ‘German style’ capsule, which UST says was a joint effort by the two companies. According to UST, it is made from precision-milled brass and skinned with gold-sputtered, six-micron Japanese PET film. The nickel-plated microphone body is milled from a solid brass billet, the company says. It comes with a swivel arm for mounting.

United Studio Technologies says that the UT 47FET’s circuitry uses “only robust and over-spec’d components, including NOS military-spec polystyrene capacitors and tested, original NOS Fairchild FETs“. The mic doesn’t have any electrolytic capacitors, which should benefit its longevity. Furthermore, the UT 47FET features a large, custom-wound CineMag output transformer, which reproduces the exact harmonic signature of the German original, UST claims.

I have yet to hear the United Studio Technologies UT 47FET, but I think it’s a very promising microphone. The company says that it developed it with a holistic approach, “bordering on the obsessive”. It certainly looks very well made. I’m especially curious to find out how it compares to the Vanguard Audio V4.

Price and availability

The United Studio Technologies UT 47FET will begin shipping by the end of January, 2020. The U.S. MSRP is USD 799.
