Animals as Leaders’ guitarist Tosin Abasi has collaborated on a new pedal with Brian Wampler of Wampler Pedals. It’s called Pathos. Now, what exactly can this distortion pedal do?
You can see from the structure that Mr Wampler has been at work here. Many of his own pedals are identical in layout to the new Pathos distortion effect. At the top are three controls for the EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble), then two more for Volume and Gain. In the middle there’s a lever for switching between Smooth and Edge voicings for the distortion sound.
The basic character, we’re told, is modelled on an American tube amp. Nevertheless, Mr Abasi says this is “different dirt boxes in one”. The video states that it can (like almost any other drive pedal, too) be used in front of a distorted amp as well as in front of a clean amp. It’s also designed for use with a strongly distorting amp without ‘mudding’ up the sound or as a boost in front of a digital modeller.
In the video you can listen in on the variety of tones that the pedal can achieve over 5 minutes. It definitely can do a lot, and Mr Abasi sounds like always: technically perfect and smooth. Accordingly, the pedal should meet similar preferences.
Just 1000 units of the Pathos are being made available worldwide by Abasi Concepts. At the official listed RRP, it is certainly not a bargain. But this effect pedal is likely to deliver some great drive tones. It is also Made in the USA, so build quality should be good.
I am curious about the reviews this pedal will attract, as the official demonstration video is definitely very tasty. Could be one to watch out for, so make sure you check out the official demo below.
