Toybox has pulled together the cream of the Toybox Blocks library to forge a rich and complex semi-modular synthesizer for Reaktor Blocks.

We’ve seen lots of modules from Toybox. Hundreds of the little things clattering around inside Reaktor Blocks, making bleeps and bloops, noises and modulations. You can lose yourself in them for all eternity. But now Toybox has pulled a few choice ones together. They’ve also limited the choice and expanded the creative possibilities with a two-oscillator semi-modular synth.
Tangle Synth is pre-patched for easy access but then lets you re-patch it in any way you want. It starts with the Tangle Oscillator. This fuses phase distortion with FM synthesis to explode into warping, twisted and complex waveforms. It has seven lo-fi modes to inject a bit of that old vintage flavour in both analogue and digital glitching forms. The companion oscillator is simpler, easier and just likes to play along with variable waveshape. It can thicken up your voices or bring the cross modulation in to play.

The filter is modelled on eight different analogue circuits and comes with distortion and wavefolding. Filter shapes can be re-ordered and morphed between. There’s a lot of modulation built-in, including a Ramp Generator, which is based on the Maths Function Generator, three multi-breakpoint modulation lanes, which sound a lot like envelopes to me, two complex LFOs and some randomisation, mixing and utility blocks.
At the end of the chain is a bunch of DSP-modelled effects, including Unison for layering into Supersaw sounds, and modulations like chorus, tremolo, phaser and flanger. And then it finishes off with a Diffusion Delay and classic Reverb effect with lots of styles to choose from.

Tangle Synth is a comprehensive and playfully workable synth for the sometimes baffling Reaktor Blocks. Bringing things down to a sensible level is a really good idea, and for a $24 introductory price tag you can’t go far wrong. And the best thing is that it works in the free Reaktor Blocks Player so you don’t need to buy the full version to run it.
