UPDATE: The new MicroFreak firmware, version 5, is out now.

Never let it be said that Arturia rest on their laurels. It is always heartwarming when you see a manufacturer not only bring out new gear but continue to update and improve existing products. As part of their Superbooth 23 announcements, Arturia have released a new version of the Microfreak alongside a new firmware update (v5). The hardware is just a simple cosmetic change with a new paint job. Under the hood, everything remains the same with its wonderful algorithmic synth engine and poly aftertouch touch sensitive keyboard.

Reach For the Stars

The limited edition MicroFreak Stellar features a sleek black finish and a set of unique and quirky graphics. So if you’ve been looking for a darker Microfreak for your set up, this is right up your street.

But the best news is that the MicroFreak range has also received a new firmware update, compatible with all versions of the MicroFreak. This new firmware adds even more sonic capabilities to what was already a very powerful instrument. Users can now import samples and play and loop them for lots of sample-based fun.

Wholegrain Goodness

Three new granular engines have also been added, further enhancing the sample-mangling capability. Keyboard Random Source transforms your keyboard into a Sample & Hold-like mod source. The attack values on the envelopes have also been reduced for extra snappiness. Finally, the MicroFreak patch slots have been increased to 512, over 300 of which are factory sounds.

Arturia’s MicroFreak v5 firmware is completely free, so there is no excuse not to expand your instrument with all these new goodies, a full four years after it first launched.

Hoping these features make it across to the Minifreak, then it’s a bit of an instabuy for me. Especially if they shunt the wavetable bit across, would be like a mini ppg.
