Much of the new sound content brings extensions to the synth engines already in the collection which includes HALion 6, Padshop 2, Retrologue 2 and Groove Agent 5 but these do cover an extraordinary palette of sounds.

HALion 6 is a sampling workstation that along with HALion Sonic 3 offers a huge range of sample-based instruments, synths, soloists and orchestra content. Most of the sound content in Absolute 5 is based upon the HALion engine with things like the Skylab synth environments, Anima lead synths and Auron granular synths. There’s also a huge Brass library and cinematic instruments covering world, orchestra and choir sounds. You have several top-class pianos to choose from and a whole truckload of percussion.

Retrologue 2 introduces the Sounds of Soul expansion covering four decades of synths sounds. Padshop 2 is a quite unique granular engine that is expanded with Polarities acoustic and electronic sounds. Groove Agent 5 expands its drum section with the Future Past Perfect toolkit for New York House, Future House and Techno.

New – Amped Elektra

Steinberg got inspired by the Hohner Electra and sampled it to pieces. They found a fully restored instrument and got to work running it through three vintage amps to produce an electrifying piano sound that’s warm, distinctive and full of soul.

New – Backbone

Backbone is the slightly impenetrable (to me) but award-winning (to other people) drum re-synthesizer that re-synthesizes and decomposes samples into noise and tonal parts. This was introduced last year and has now made its way into the Absolute Collection. It’s a fabulous tool for sound designers or people wanting to be re-inspired by their sample collections by destroying them and remaking them in Backbone.

While Absolute 5 is sample-heavy the HALion engine is remarkably versatile and good at giving the illusion of synthesis around some high-quality raw materials. Retrologue and Padshop never seem to disappoint and the extra content makes this collection a bit of a treasure trove of possible sounds.

It’s available for €499 from the Steinberg store.
