Just when you thought the year was up, SPL has dropped an absolute pearl of a compressor that is going to instantly jump onto the Christmas wishlist of professional engineers and producers worldwide.

SPL Venos

As we’ve mentioned, the Venos is a tube compressor that can get you in the same ballpark as classics like the Fairchild 670, with its variable bias design. However, the Venos has stepped controls for precision operation and easy recall, as well as a range of other modern features to take on mixing and mastering applications.

More Information

There are six different operating modes, including Linear, Modern, Vintage, Focus, Punch, and External Sidechain. This means the Venos is certainly not a “set-and-forget” vibe compressor for occasional use. Instead, the Venos is designed to be your go-to workhorse in your studio, capable of any style of compression you need.

Within the circuitry of the Venos, the tube stage is guided by the rectifier circuit with three diode control modes. This allows you to choose from germanium, LED, and silicon diode modes, which affect the attack and release parameters. All of the main controls, including the Input gain, threshold, tube bias, and output gain, use 41-step knobs for enhanced precision.

Meanwhile, the attack and release time controls have six settings each, so you can quickly dial in the compression feel required. In addition, you can add tonal enhancement with two distinctive EQ settings, including a slightly (+2 dB) smilling Air Bass setting and a high-frequency roll-off Tape emulation setting. Overall, the Venos is a perfect balance of precision and musical utility.
