The new Supa Funk Envelope Bi-Filter from Canadian pedal maker SolidGoldFX is, well, super funky! The pedal has some great raw envelope filter tones, perfect not only for guitar and bass, but also synths/keys. Following on from its Funkzilla and Funk Lite pedals, this new SolidGoldFX unit takes the funk to another dimension.

A good quality envelope filter can be a wonderful thing, and this new pedal by SolidGoldFX could be just the trick for funking out with. The Supa Funk Envelope Bi-Filter has a few nice touches to the circuit design, including envelope filtering with dual blendable low pass filters as well as a tuneable envelope generator. You can also select the direction of the filter sweep.

Raw Funk

You get controls for DEPTH, FREQSENS (attack), COLOR and OUTPUT, and a mini-toggle switch for choosing the DIRECTION. It looks fairly easy to dial in, with the COLOR knob letting you blend in that second low-pass filter.

The DEPTH adjusts the width or peak of the envelope effect, and FREQ (frequency) allows you to choose the centre frequency of the filter, so you can go low and dirty, or high and mighty. The SENS, or attack, is how you adjust the decay time and sensitivity of the envelope filter, which you can set to taste and playing style.

I’ve been listening to the video demos below and it sounds pretty raw and funky to me, which is exactly what you want from a decent envelope filter. I really like the tones it can produce. It is an all-analogue circuit and has true-bypass switching, so it won’t mess with your tone when not engaged. The top-mounted jacks are also a nice touch. The pedal runs from an external 9V DC power supply.

The price is also pretty good for a handmade pedal. Each one is built in Montreal, Canada and sounds like SolidGoldFX has added some secret funk sauce to the mix with this one!
