The new Solar Guitars Kirk Windstein E1.6KW signature model has just been announced. This minimalist, single-pickup guitar is for the Crowbar and Down guitarist. Designed in conjunction with Kirk Windstein. Could this stripped-back riff machine be the perfect high-gain weapon?

Kirk Windstein

Solar Guitars’ Kirk Windstein comes in a Matte White finish over an alder body. This is paired with a C-shape maple set-thru body 24.75” scale length neck. It has 22 super-jumbo stainless steel frets on an ebony fretboard. Plus custom block inlays, custom side block inlays (for stage use) and Windstein’s logo on the 12th fret.

Overall, the modern Explorer-style design works well visually with the reverse headstock and looks tight, tidy and somewhat lethal!

Hardware

The stripped-back guitar comes with rock-solid, minimal hardware all in black. This includes a TonePros locking TOM string-thru bridge, paired with a set of Solar 18:1 locking tuners and a graphite nut.

I would guess that this will provide a solid platform for any guitar player that requires a solid tone, with a tight bottom end and one that works well with high gain at stage volume.

EMG

With a single EMG 81 active humbucker in the bridge position, this guitar means business. Controlled by the single volume control and designed as a no-fuss high gain riff machine. I can see this guitar being a lot of fun to play. Windstein’s two bands Crowbar and Down are both known for a crushing guitar tone. And so this minimal design makes perfect sense.

I also think this latest signature model was a smart move on Ola Englund’s part and will only cement Solar Guitar’s reputation for supplying exactly what modern guitarists need.

The design literally looks like some kind of axe/weapon and I can just imagine that it will be perfect for use in a band like Crowbar.

MSRP – USD 1149 inc gig bag

I’m not normally a fan of this type of design at all, but this particular model looks awesome. Well done!
