The new Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail Deluxe combines an analogue delay with digital control. It follows on from the company’s original Vapor Trail pedal and takes it to new heights.

This new Deluxe version of Seymour Duncan’s Vapor Trail adds even more control to the original’s Bucket Brigade delay and modulation effects. Vapor Trail Deluxe has a 100% analogue signal path, but utilises digital control to get the most out of the circuit, bringing together the best of both worlds.

Four new Modes

It actually uses four of the largest BBD chips currently in production, for an enhanced warmth and delay times of up to 1.2 seconds. Which is great for an analogue delay. You now have four new modes that allow you to really experiment with your delay times and types; Micro Delay gets you fast slapback or double-tracking sounds, Pitch Sequence gives you octaves up and down with eight customisable rhythm sequences, Pitch Bender gets you dive-bombing pitch bends plus glissando control via the tap/hold footswitch, and finally, Runaway offers you endless repeats with what Seymour Duncan describes as  “effortless control”.

Digital Control

Having digital control allows you to tap tempo with subdivisions, have expression pedal control, and the really handy tails on/off option for repeats when the effect is bypassed. You also get three preset locations for storing your favourite tones which have instant recall. I really like that external effects can also be added to the pedal’s trails via a Wet Insert jack. It makes this pedal even more versatile.

Overall, the control layout is very user friendly at first glance, with controls for Mix, Repeats, Time, Depth/Multi, Rate and Mode, and dedicated footswitches for Bypass (hold for presets) and Tap/Hold (Preset Select). I think it offers a lot of options for the price point, certainly lots of control. If you like analogue delays, well, you can hear it in action in the demo video below.
