RYK has been teasing this new module on Instagram for some time but after being all over Loopop’s Misha video we now know it’s the Vector Wave, and it looks amazing.

Vector Wave

It’s that Big-Pixel screen that really draws your attention to the Vector Wave. It’s been glowing away in many Instagram posts showing waveforms, metering and other graphically retro possibilities. While the display is fascinating, it’s what’s behind the front panel that gets really interesting.

Vector Wave brings together 16 oscillator FM and thumb-controlled vector synthesis. The 16 oscillators are divided into 4 banks and can be configured to crash into each other for complex FM tones or run together for additive synthesis. The vector part is controlled via a cool little thumbstick which lets you morph between the 4 banks of oscillators. I guess each bank sits in a corner of an XY space, and you joystick your way among them.

The module also contains “Warp Warping”, although that might be a typo on the website and should probably read “Wave Warping”. It can continuously vary the waveforms between sine, triangle, saw and pulse shapes. Wave Folding is also on hand for some extreme sonic bending.

Modulation

Modulation is provided by two envelopes and two LFOs which can be applied per voice when in polyphonic mode. There’s an internal modulation slot matrix for easy routing of internal and external modulation sources. You can record the joystick movements and then trigger them externally – that sounds exciting!

The Vector Wave is MIDI controllable, which also opens up the oscillators to polyphonic voices and multitimbral usage. An additional Expander Module will add 3 more V/Oct and Gate inputs to give you CV-controlled polyphony.

In the wild

This is looking like a very exciting module. The only sound demo we have at the moment are a few Instas and the Loopop video on the Eventide Misha. I get the feeling RYK was surprised by its role in the video, and it’s slightly odd that Loopop doesn’t mention it.
