Randomwaves Drumboy Pro Edition: Hit That Perfect Beat Boy
Randomwaves is back with the Drumboy Pro Edition, an open-source sample-based drum machine with improvements over the previous version.
Randomwaves Drumboy Pro Edition
In 2024, we told you about Drumboy and Synthgirl, two handheld music-making devices that fulfilled drum machine and wavetable synth duties, respectively. Now the company behind the pair, Randomwaves, is back, this time with Drumboy Pro Edition, a more robust take on the Drumboy that promises to level up all around.
Randomwaves Drumboy Pro Edition: Hardware Feel
As the name suggests, the Drumboy Pro Edition is a little more, well, professional. Based on user feedback, Randomwaves has improved things all around, keeping the sample-based drum machine flow of the original but making sure the build quality is better.

First of all, it has more of a hardware feel than the original, with silent, low-profile tactile buttons, eight assignable rotary knobs, and a bigger display sourced from a new panel manufacturer. The 5.3-inch screen lets you see more of what you’re doing, including a new song mode.
There’s also a charge pad for taking the Drumboy Pro Edition on the go, with up to five hours of play time per charge. In the original article, Lasse mentioned that the lack of batteries seemed like a missed opportunity. I guess they listened.
Randomwaves Drumboy Pro Edition: New Features
The new Drumboy Pro has improvements to the software, too. You now have real-time access to things like sample volume, pitch, play direction, and bit rate, with adjustable start and end points. There’s also now probability for switching things up in your patterns.
In terms of sound design, Randomwaves has opened up the routing, with control over filter types and effects, plus 10 assignable LFOs. There’s also an updated dynamic fill generator for quickly creating trap-style rolls and other glitchy patterns, perfect for live performance.
Not satisfied with the supplied OS? You’re in luck, as, like the original Drumboy (now called the Drumboy Mini), the new Pro edition is open source, so you’re free to hack away.
Randomwaves Drumboy Pro Edition: Pricing and Availability
As with the Drumboy and Synthgirl, Randomwaves is launching via a Kickstarter campaign. It kicks off (ahem) on March 15, 2026. If you go to the company’s website now, you can secure a Very Early Bird Price of $239. That’s $100 off the MSRP of $339.
