The Ohmie is a transformerless mic with a “finished” sound profile, ideal for home recording, field recording, or content creation, with an optional specialized pop filter that is attached magnetically for straightforward operation.

Apart from its unique looks, the Ohmie does something other microphones don’t with the ability to switch between regular 48V and 80V for an extra 5 dB of sensitivity. The transformerless circuit design is a key aspect that allows this switch to step up the internal voltage with the same phantom power from your audio interface, preamp, or mixing console.

More Information

To make things more interesting, the 80V mode doesn’t just boost the gain. When you switch over, the way the mic picks up the very same sound source is now more refined, with more immediate transient response. The signal is also pushed further forward in the mix, which makes the Ohmie a useful tool for layering vocals and instruments.

With the punchy 80V mode, you can capture your lead vocal passages, and then switch to the slightly more relaxed 48V mode to record the backing vocal parts, harmonies, and overdubs. This will create a natural contrast between the performances, adding to the overall texture and depth of the mix, which will stand out even further when you start adding effects like chorus, delay, and reverb.

While the Ohmie doesn’t feature interchangeable acoustic screens like the fancier Ohma World condensers and ribbon mics, there is a handy optional pop filter designed exclusively for the Ohmie. This snaps on magnetically to the microphone directly, and then back onto its neat little desktop stand when it’s not in use. Overall, the Ohmie is a very exciting prospect that could catch on quickly compared to other mics in this price range.
