NAMM 2022: Auratone 5C Active Super Sound Cube
Have you ever wished for a pair of active Auratones? With the new Auratone 5C Active Super Sound Cube just unveiled at NAMM 2022, the notorious cube speakers are finally available with built-in amplifiers.
Auratone Active 5C Super Sound Cube
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Auratones. Love them or hate them – you can’t argue the fact that the little cubes are among the best known studio monitor designs of all time. They’ve even been inducted into the TECnology Hall of Fame. And now you can finally get yourself a pair of Auratones with built-in amplifiers, thereby eliminating the need for an external amp.
According to the manufacturer, the Auratone Active 5C Super Sound Cube is exactly the same as the passive model, except with a built-in amplifier. The amp module was developed by Polish manufacturer Bettermaker and builds on the circuitry of the dual-channel Auratone A2-30 amp, also a Bettermaker design. The amp puts out 50 watts of power.
The Auratone Active 5C Super Sound Cube offers a 1/4”-XLR combo input on the back. The active monitor uses an external DC power supply. It also offers protection against overcurrent, overheating, and short circuits.
The rest remains the same. The active model has the same 4.5” full range driver as the passive model. The frequency response is also the same and covers 80 Hz to 15 kHz. The manufacturer states an impedance of 8 ohms and a signal to noise ratio greater than 100 dB.
Price and availability
The Auratone Active 5C Super Sound Cube studio monitors will be available soon for USD 749 per pair. While that price seems ambitious, I’m sure that many Auratone fans will like the idea of an active version with a dedicated, built-in amp.
